In the body paragraphs, I would like to see you synthesize the five credible research sources that you are using for this essay. The concluding section is likely to be the briefest part of the essay, and it might restate the thesis statement, include information about implications about the subject you have written about, and your connection to the topic.
Essay #4 Assignment: Research Paper October 25, 2017
Our Essay #4 will be due on Wednesday, November 29, at the start of class on Blackboard, and it will
be a 1,200-1,500 word research paper that must supplemental Works Cited page in order to receive a
passing grade. The Works Cited page will use MLA format and will include at least five reputable
sources that will be synthesized into the essay using quotations, summaries, and paraphrases.
The essay should be double-spaced with one-inch margins using Times New Roman 12 point font. The
Purdue University OWL website, in addition to our textbook, is a good resource for MLA in text
citations and Works Cited formatting.
Topics: Please select a topic that you are passionate about that calls for additional research. It might be
a good idea to take a topic that appears on the surface to be complicated by that you could analyze
effectively using processes such as cause and effect, compare and contrast, division or process analysis.
Please do not select a topic that you have already written about in one of your previous EGL-1010
essays. Please formulate a research question which would call for further examination, such as:
Are addictions genetically transmitted?
What learning challenges do children born to immigrant parents in the U.S. face?
Has the controversy over abortion in the U.S. changed substantially in the last 40 years?
What is the current state of U.S. race relations?
Which states have the most effective public healthcare systems?
Given China’s emerging economic strength and investment in the U.S. combined with their
cyber spying, what is the U.S. diplomatic posture towards the People’s Republic of China?
With escalating tuition rates, what does the future of selective four-year colleges and
universities in the U.S. look like?
What are the differing outcomes for children from two-parent versus single parent U.S.
families?
Your topic proposal is due Wednesday, Nov. 1, in class, and it should include information on how you
plan to conduct research, how you plan to choose your sources and why you are interested in the
subject you have chosen.
It will be important to practice academic honesty in this paper and to properly cite your sources.
Historical information and generally accepted knowledge, of course, do not need to be cited, but we
should always attribute information that other people have spent considerable time developing and
supporting, such as surveys, theories and other research. In order to succeed, you will also need to build
an effective thesis statement and have at least three examples to support your point.
This essay rough draft will be due Monday, Nov. 27, with the preliminary thesis and scratch outline due
on Monday, Nov. 20. Please remember that this essay and related assignments account for 25 percent of
your grade and make a corresponding effort. Late submissions will be penalized 10 points per class
period. Library Research Day will be Nov. 8, while we will have individual conferences on Nov. 6 and
