CIEN 421 — Structural Steel Design Group Project (20 points) Requirement: Provide an economical design for the single-story steel structure shown. Figure 1 shows the structural system, where LI and L2 are the plan dimensions. The structure is strengthened by bracing along elevations A, D, 2, and 4 to resist horizontal loading. Figures 2 and 3 show the bracing arrangement within the elevations. Height of the story is 17 ft. The structure is under different types of loadings, including dead load, roof live load, snow load, and wind load. Dimensions, spacings, and loading information are provided in Table 1. This is a group project (3 students per group). Each group is required to submit a well-written detailed professional report and make a presentation. Your calculations should include the design of beams, girders, columns and bracings. The report should include drawings including plan with dimensions (using AutoCAD suggested), showing sizes of all members, along with your calculations. The outline of the final report should include the following sections: (1) Abstract, (2) Introduction, (3) Design and Details, (4) Summary and Conclusions, (5) Appendices (if needed), and (6) References. Refer to course Syllabus for report and presentation deadline.
