00:17Hello. I’m Dr. Heather Scott, Assistant Professor and Director of Leadership Studies at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. I have a variety of experiences in higher education ranging from public to private, single gender, and coed institutions. My research interests include women and leadership. The US Census Bureau predicts by the year 2050, more than 50% of our population will be comprised by the primary, ethnic minority groups.
- 00:48Along with this population shift, th ere is a need for a shift in understanding more about diversity and inclusion. This film will equip the learner to define diversity and inclusion. Additionally, we will explore the differences between diversity and inclusion and prepare the learner to identify those differences. And lastly, we will explore the barriers and challenges to overcoming obstacles and discussing issues related to diversity and inclusion.
- 01:21In defining diversity and inclusion, we define diversity as the range of human differences. These differences can include characteristics such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, religious affiliation, disability, and age. Along with the identification of these differences, it is important to note that diversity also encompasses respect for these differences. Coupled with the notion of acceptance is inclusion.
01:53Think of inclusion as a verb. It’s the “what” that an organization does to ensure that individuals are welcomed and respected from various backgrounds. Now that we have defined diversity and inclusion, let’s look at identifying some of the differences between diversity and inclusion. Chin and Trimble, in 2015, ascertained that inclusion is more than just the representation of human differences.
- 02:24They state that we need a paradigm shift, that this must be something that is encountered with action. Historically, leadership studies and leadership theory has not addressed issues of diversity. If diversity is about valuing differences, think of inclusion as a next step. We are looking to purposefully and intentionally weave differences of opinions into theory building and organizations.
02:54Chin and Trimble further state that inclusiveness is an affirmation and respect for all. This presumes that leaders and organizations will become culturally competent to be responsive to the needs of individuals and their organizations. With this understanding of diversity and inclusion, let’s explore some of the barriers to diversity and inclusion. A common barrier is quite simply a lack of understanding of the terms diversity and inclusion. Clearly defining these terms and identifying the differences in these terms brings the opportunity to develop richer experiences of inclusion.
03:35Organizations and individuals should recognize that inclusion is actionable. It takes time and purposeful work. It’s more than just inviting diverse individuals to the table. It’s creating an environment that seeks to include the perspectives of those who are represented and not represented. Inclusion is thinking beyond oneself and lived experiences but also considering the lived experiences and subsequent impact of those experiences on others.
04:05Interrogating the representation of diverse perspectives or the lack of diverse perspectives is paramount to developing the next generation of future leaders. As individuals from an array of backgrounds come together to challenge the social issues of our time, respect and acceptance will be the difference between failure and success to overcoming these obstacles in diversity and inclusion. Consider the dimensions of your own identity and how these dimensions impact how you engage with the world around you.
- 04:39Exploring issues of diversity and inclusion will provide a balanced perspective of the world we live in. Growing in your own leadership will equip and encourage you to become more actionable in your efforts towards inclusion. I recommend checking out Chin and Trimble’s Diversity and Leadership published by SAGE. This text reminds us of the importance of the need for a new paradigm shift as we examine and explore leadership.
