PART 1:

Writing Your Hypothesis

Let’s practice writing hypotheses and get one FINALIZED for you to use for your final project paper.

What I want you to do here is select a topic that is of interest to you, is suitable for this class, and then explain what you would study relative to the topic.

How would you frame an hypothesis for the study? What would the null hypothesis be? What would the alternative hypothesis be?

What would you IV be? What would your DV(s) be?

For example, let’s say you have an interest in knowing why some people seek to earn a college degree, but others do not. Let’s say you have an idea that it could be related to family educational background achievement. You may believe that if a college student comes from a home where one or both parents have achieved a bachelor’s degree or higher, it is more likely that the children of those parents will also earn a bachelor’s or higher degree.

Your null hypothesis could be: Among students surveyed in SS3375, results will show there is norelationship between matriculating in college to earn a bachelor’s degree and the educational levels of the parents of a college student.

Your alternative hypothesis could be: Among students surveyed in SS3375, most believe there is a relationship between matriculating in college to earn a bachelor’s degree and the educational levels of the parents of a college student.

It could also be stated like this.

Null Hypothesis: There is no relationship between a student earning a bachelor’s degree when neither parent holds a college degree.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a relationship between a student earning a bachelor’s degree when one or both parent/s has a college degree.

Be sure to understand what a null hypothesis is, what an alternative hypothesis is, and why they are both used in quantiative research.

In both of these examples the IV variable would be: Educational level of parent.

In both of these examples the DV variable would be: Bachelor’s degree of student.

Remember that the IV is the steady variable; the dependent variable is the one expected to change (or not) because of the influence (or not) of the independent variable.

This hypothesis should eventually be the one you will use for your project paper!!!

Remember that you have a DEADLINE on this.

Here are some ideas that are worthy of survey development. You should be able to develop a hypothesis and questions from any of these.
