and inspiration come from multiple sources. While it is important to
read textbooks and watch videos of prominent MFT practitioners, it might
also be valuable to explore other forms of resources, such as art,
literature, cinema, and photography to find opportunities to reflect on
what you have learned so far, acquire the ownership of the models that
you are considering, and then develop a better understanding of how
these models might be applied in your clinical work. This week, read a
fictional novel that will help you to reflect on the theories that you
learned earlier in this course, and then further explore the concepts
from these theories.

Having studied social learning theory, read the juvenile fiction novel, The Giver by
Lois Lowry. As you read, think about the life of Jonas (the main
character) and consider why his life is the way that it is; why does he
not question anything at first and then why does he change? Why can he
not see color and then later he can? In short, how does his life
experience determine his reality? Once you have finished reading the
book, prepare a presentation that addresses the application of social
learning theory to this fictional life experience. In your
presentation, address each of the following questions (2 points each):

  • How does social learning theory apply to Jonas’ life?
  • What makes it “normal” to live the way the community requires (e.g.,
to obey without question, take a pill to end the “stirrings”, to
euthanize babies and the elderly that are not as healthy as others, to
    always be polite, etc.)?
  • What is the role of both “nature” and “nurture” in his development?
  • How might clients’ lives be similar to Jonas’ life?

Length: 10-15 slides

Good presentations do not contain too much information in the
slides/transitions. They contain enough information to “whet the
appetite” of the participants, and then the presenter completes the
presentation with his or her narration. So, to complete the
presentation, add narration with the presentations or make notes or provide a transcript of what you would say along with the slides/transitions.

Your presentation should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the
ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and
insights (yours) relating directly to this topic. Your presentation
should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards (slides
should have citations where information is used from an outside source
and there should be a references slide at the end with full APA
citations of all material used in the presentation).
